How many a man (has) walked the earth
Watching around him others die
"'Tis for others to worship Him now
Plenty of time still do have I"
Year upon year frittered he
Seeking ways to gladden his soul
Preaching unto others the fear of God
Content thereby, having made it his goal
At a friend's house, beside the corpse
He spoke words worthy of just and wise
Then went into the night with goblets of wine
And reached upon dawn in moans and sighs
His mind still lost in longings and lust
He found his body writhing in pain
A step away from death, pleasures no longer did entice
A dying thought -- "What did I gain?"
